Over the weekend a friend of mine wanted me and a couple of her family members to checkout an apartment with her and let her know what we think as she wasn't quite sure about getting it.
On arriving the property there was a bit of excitement in the air since some of us hadn't seen each other in months, except off course on facebook haha!
Anyway after all the greetings we entered the building and that was where it all really began, the manager kept on hushing us saying we can't make noise. I mean we couldn't even say anything because each time anyone of us tried to say something she'll say sssssshhhhhh! we sha kept quiet but my friend was already getting irritated. For the record there were 5 of us all Nigerians (4 ladies & a guy), the manager & her assistant were Caucasian (2 ladies)
After checking out the apartment (which was quite nice btw) we began asking questions about utilities etc. and then came the major questions (since the manager seemed to be so concerned about keeping it quiet) that lead us to really X the place (and the manager) off:
Friend: Is it always this quiet here, I mean you kept on hushing us up on our way in here, can we at least talk?
Manager: Yes it is always quiet.
Friend's mum: so don't you have kids in the complex that run around making noise while playing?
Manager: uhm no because the kids here want to go to college so they spend a lot their time on the computer.
Immediately I heard that I just started walking towards the door because in IMHO that comment had a race undertone to it and I refuse to waste my saliva trying to talk some serious sense into her head. We all just stormed outta the place sha...my friend was soooooo pissed! So because we're black you don't think we'll be interested in college? Like what the heck! 4 of us are already graduates with 1 still in college.
So what do you guys think? was it a harmless statement or did we overreact?
